Reading the coordinates
Latitude comes first (north–south, −90 to 90 — negative is southern hemisphere), longitude second (east–west, −180 to 180 — negative is western hemisphere, i.e. the Americas). Six decimal places pin a point to roughly 11 cm; four decimals ≈ 11 m is enough for most uses.
The DMS panel (degrees° minutes′ seconds″) is the format marine charts, aviation and older GPS units use. Convert between formats with the built-in converter — paste the output anywhere and it just works.
What people use coordinates for
Emergency services. What3words aside, dispatch systems still take raw lat/lng — reading coordinates off a map is the fastest way to tell them exactly where you are.
Surveying & construction. Property corners, setbacks and stakeout points all start as a coordinate pair.
Geocaching & outdoor. Cache listings are published in coordinates — paste them here to see the spot before you hike.
Real estate & land. A coordinate pair is unambiguous in a way street addresses sometimes aren't — especially for rural land.

Once you have the coordinates: the radius map tool draws a circle around them, the distance calculator measures to another point, and what is my elevation looks up the terrain height at that spot. And to find coordinates in the first place, this page is the tool — but the GPS coordinates guide covers phone methods, DMS history and format tips in depth.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the GPS coordinates of my current location?
Press the 'My location' button in the search box — the browser asks for permission, then drops a marker at your exact position with both DD and DMS readouts. Works on phone and desktop.
What format are the coordinates in?
Both. The main readout is decimal degrees (DD) — the format Google Maps, APIs and most modern tools use. The DMS panel gives degrees-minutes-seconds for marine charts, aviation and older GPS units.
Which comes first — latitude or longitude?
Latitude (north–south) always comes first, then longitude (east–west). New York is 40.71, −74.00: the ~40 is latitude. If the longitude is between −180 and −60, you're looking at the Americas.
Can I enter coordinates I already have?
Yes — the DMS→DD converter accepts degrees, minutes and seconds with a hemisphere selector, and outputs decimal degrees. Or paste decimal coordinates straight into the search box.
How precise are the coordinates?
The map click places a point to sub-meter precision; the readout shows six decimals (~11 cm). Your actual accuracy depends on how precisely you clicked and the underlying map imagery.
