Distance Between Two Places

Pick any two points — addresses, cities or a spot on the map — and get the straight-line (“as the crow flies”) distance between them instantly, plus a realistic estimate of the driving distance.

Straight-line distance vs. driving distance

This tool measures the great-circle distance — the shortest path over the Earth's curved surface. Roads, however, follow terrain, avoid rivers and detour around property lines, so real driving distance typically runs 20–40% longer than the straight-line figure (more in mountains, less on flat grids). We show a 1.2×–1.4× estimate range as a planning guide. A true turn-by-turn driving distance calculator is on the roadmap — for now, treat the estimate as just that.

Tips for accurate measurements

  • Searching for a city name centers the point on the city's centroid — for door-to-door precision, use a full street address instead.
  • For “how far am I from X right now”, use the My location button on point A so your GPS position is used instead of a guessed address.
  • Distances under a mile are where unit choice matters most — switch to feet or meters for short hops.
  • Need to go around obstacles rather than straight over them? Trace a path with the route distance tool.

Frequently asked questions

How is the distance between two addresses calculated?

It uses the haversine formula on a spherical Earth model — the standard way to compute great-circle distance from latitude and longitude. At everyday distances it is accurate to within about 0.1%.

Why is the driving distance longer than the straight-line distance?

Roads curve, climb and detour, so virtually every drive is longer than the direct line. Studies of road networks typically find driving distance 20–40% above straight-line distance, which is why the tool shows an estimate range rather than a single number.

Can I measure the distance from my current location?

Yes — use the My location button next to either search box. Your browser will ask for permission to share your GPS position, and the measurement starts from there.

Does this work for international distances?

Yes. The address search covers the whole planet and the great-circle math makes no assumptions about country boundaries, so New York to Tokyo works exactly like New York to Boston.

Can I get the coordinates of each point?

Yes — under each search box the tool displays latitude and longitude in decimal degrees with a one-click copy button, handy for pasting into other systems.
