Map Area Calculator — Draw a Shape, Get the Acres
Click the corners of any plot on the map — a property line, a field, a park, a construction site — and the area appears instantly in acres, square feet, hectares and more. The calculation runs entirely in your browser.

Click corners of your plot in order · the area fills in from 3 corners · drag any corner to reshape.
How to measure area on a map
- Zoom to the plot and click its first corner.
- Keep clicking around the boundary in order — clockwise or counterclockwise, both work. The shape fills in once you have three corners.
- Drag any corner to snap it precisely onto the boundary. Undo corner removes the last point if you overshoot.
- Read the area in your preferred unit from the result card — all six units are shown at once, so there is no unit conversion to do by hand.
Areas are computed with a spherical-excess formula on the Earth's surface, which matches what survey-grade tools report for plots up to several square miles. For parcels smaller than a city lot, the number you get is limited by how precisely you place the corners rather than by the math.
How big is an acre, really?
An acre is 43,560 square feet — roughly a square 208.7 feet on a side, or about 70% of a soccer field. It is not a square by definition, though: any shape adding up to 43,560 sq ft counts, which is why long, narrow “ribbon” lots can still be listed as an acre.
Reference conversions
- 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft (≈ 208.7 ft × 208.7 ft)
- 1 acre = 4,046.86 m² / 0.4047 hectares
- 1 hectare = 2.471 acres
- 1 sq mile = 640 acres
- 1 sq km = 247.1 acres
- 1 sq mile = 2.59 sq km
Things compared to an acre
- Tennis court (doubles): 0.06 acres
- Basketball court (NBA): 0.11 acres
- American football field: 1.32 acres
- FIFA soccer pitch: ≈ 1.76 acres
- Typical US city block: 2–3 acres
- Walmart supercenter footprint incl. parking: 10–15 acres

Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the map area calculator?
The geometry is exact for the polygon you draw (spherical surface math, not flat-map approximations). The practical accuracy depends on how precisely your corners trace the real boundary — zoom in and place corners carefully for survey-grade comparability on small lots.
Can I measure the area of my property?
Yes, that's the most common use. Trace along the property line as shown on your plat or deed. Remember that parcel boundaries can be irregular: the more corners you add, the closer the match.
How do I convert the result to square feet or hectares?
You don't have to — all six units (acres, sq ft, sq miles, hectares, sq km, m²) are displayed simultaneously in the result card.
Is the area affected by hills and slopes?
This tool measures planimetric (flat, horizontal) area — the same convention used by land records and GIS. The true surface area of a steep hillside is larger than its map area.
Can I export the measured shape?
Yes — PNG gives you a snapshot image, and KML exports the polygon for Google Earth or Google My Maps.
