How to map your store's trade area
- Center on the store. Search the exact storefront, not the shopping center.
- Draw the rings. 5 miles for convenience trips, 10 for destination shopping, 15 for major purchases — adjust to your category.
- Compare locations. Add a circle per candidate site (different colors) and see whose coverage overlaps whom.
- Export for the deck. PNG for slides, the share link for live discussions, KML for your GIS colleague.
Pair the rings with numbers: the population tool counts the people inside each ring and the ZIP tool lists the postal codes — together they turn a pretty map into a trade-area brief.
Trade area rings: which distances matter
5 miles — convenience. Groceries, coffee, pharmacy: the trips that happen weekly without planning.
10 miles — destination. Furniture, electronics, dining out: planned trips customers accept for the right offer.
15 miles — exceptional. Big-ticket and specialty retail: the customer will cross a metro boundary once, not twice.
These are straight-line rings; a 10-mile ring across a highway river is a different business than 10 miles down the interstate. Overlay your own customer pins on top of the ring and the gaps become obvious.
Frequently asked questions
What is a store coverage map?
A map showing how far your store's customers come from — usually as rings of 5, 10 and 15 miles around the location. It communicates your trade area to staff, franchisors, lenders and landlords in one glance.
How do I choose the right ring sizes?
Match them to your category: convenience retail lives on a 5-mile ring, destination shopping on 10, and big-ticket or specialty on 15+. Your own customer data beats any rule of thumb.
Can I compare two store locations?
Yes — add circles for each candidate location (up to 12) with different colors, and see where coverage overlaps. Overlap signals cannibalization; gaps signal opportunity.
Can I export the coverage map?
Yes — PNG for presentations, KML for Google Earth and My Maps, and the share link keeps a live version stakeholders can open anytime.
Is this store coverage map free?
Yes — free with no signup or usage caps. The site is funded by display advertising.
